Zentangle Drawings

One day, Maria Thomas, a lettering artist, shared with her friend, Rick Roberts, a Zen Buddhist monk, what she experienced as she drew background patterns on a manuscript she was creating. She felt a sense of timelessness, freedom and well-being, a complete focus on what she was doing with no thought or worry about anything else. "You're describing meditation," Rick said. Together, they created a simple method so others might enjoy a similar experience. It is called Zentangle®. You can get all the details at www.zentangle.com.

I was introduced to Zentangle ®    by a friend who took one of their workshops. I immediately recognized that what was said about the Zentangle ®    process—that it is meditative, relieves stress, improves focus, increases attention span and the ability to concentrate—was what I had been saying and teaching about mandalas for several years. Moreover, the process of creating a Zentangle® drawing was so closely related to my mandala making process that it seemed the same to me. I started experimenting—combining the two techniques—and I was hooked. It is so much fun and so easy, I recommend it to everyone regardless of their ability to draw. As I explained earlier (see Mandalas), I can’t draw, but I can make shapes, lines, squiggles and color them!
